Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) is a framework that emphasizes developing emotional intelligence, interpersonal skills, and responsible decision-making. Incorporating SEL in children's books makes them more impactful by teaching children how to navigate their emotions, build healthy relationships, and approach challenges with resilience.
SEL is the process through which children and adults acquire and apply the skills necessary to:
Understand and manage emotions.
Set and achieve positive goals.
Feel and show empathy for others.
Establish and maintain positive relationships.
Make responsible decisions.
The Five Core Competencies of SEL
According to the Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL), SEL focuses on five key areas:
1. Self-Awareness
Understanding one's emotions, strengths, weaknesses, and values.
Recognizing how emotions influence thoughts and behaviors.
Example: A character in a book overcoming self-doubt to achieve a goal.
2. Self-Management
Regulating emotions, thoughts, and behaviors in different situations.
Developing resilience, impulse control, and stress management.
Example: A character learning to stay calm and persevere through challenges.
3. Social Awareness
Understanding and empathizing with others from diverse backgrounds.
Recognizing social norms and being open to different perspectives.
Example: A character who befriends someone different from them and learns about their culture.
4. Relationship Skills
Building and maintaining healthy relationships through communication, active listening, and cooperation.
Learning to resolve conflicts constructively.
Example: A story where characters work together to solve a problem, emphasizing teamwork.
5. Responsible Decision-Making
Making ethical and constructive choices based on empathy, values, and consequences.
Example: A character choosing to stand up for a friend being bullied.

SEL equips kids with problem-solving skills and resilience for personal, academic, and social situations.
4. Encourages Healthy Relationships
Books can teach children how to form and maintain meaningful friendships and navigate social dynamics.
